Football Bears welcome 10 to the team

(April 28, 2010) On the eve of their annual Spring Camp, the University of Alberta Golden Bears football program is excited to announce the addition of 10 players for the upcoming 2010 season.

Joining the Alberta gridiron program are: offensive linemen Eli Hankinson and Shawn Walter; receivers Mike Wojcicki and Bradley Quartel; quarterback Jeff Vela; defensive backs David Berg and Jon Mora; linebacker Tommy Tsoumpas; and defensive linemen Steven Giang and Delano Tennent.

Six of the 10 recruits are straight out of high school, including four from Edmonton and area, while the other four new bodies are from the Canadian Junior Football League.

Tsoumpas comes to the Golden Bears from Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton, and is the younger brother of Dimitri Tsoumpas, currently with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL.

Also from the Edmonton high school system are Shawn Walter, winner of the Rollie Miles Leadership Award and the Most Outstanding Lineman Award, from St. Francis Xavier High School, as well as Bradley Quartel an all-star receiver also from Ross Sheppard, and Bev Facey defensive back Jon Mora who played for the 2009 U-17 provincial team and in the 2010 Senior Bowl.

Coming from the Edmonton Wildcats, the 2009 CJFL national championship finalists are receiver Mike Wojcicki, defensive linemen Steven Giang and Delano Tennent, as well as DB David Berg, who led the PFC in special team return yards.

Signal-caller Jeff Vela, as well as OL Eli Hankinson, come north from Calgary, where Vela played for Cresent Heights High School and at the 2010 Senior Bowl, while Hankinson plied his trade at Henry Wise Wood High School, and was on the 2009 Team Alberta line and the 2010 Senior Bowl squad.
