(April 12, 2010) Four members of the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team have been named to the annual CIS East-West bowl game, to be played May 8 at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London, Ontario.

Making the CIS West roster from the Evergreen and Gold are Thomas Fry and Nicholas Ternovatsky, both offensive linemen for Alberta, as well as defensive end Craig Gerbrandt and punter/place-kicker Hugh O'Neill.
The University of Western Ontario is hosting the event for the second straight year. The affair was previously held at McMaster (2008), Laval (2007, 2006) and Wilfrid Laurier (2005, 2004, 2003). Kickoff for the 2010 game is set for 1 p.m.
Last spring, the West team prevailed 16-7 to improve its all-time record to 6-1 in the series.
The hard and high-kicking O'Neill, originally from Edmonton, will undoubtedly receive many long looks from scouts on both sides of the border, as the three-time CIS All-Canadian has been a dominant punter in Canada West over the previous three seasons.
The Ross Sheppard high school grad has led Canada West in punt yard average every year he has played, including his rookie campaign when he hit a 41.7 yard per punt average and was unanimously selected as the conference punter and place-kicker All-Star right out of high school. He currently holds a 42.1 punt yard average over three seasons.
In 2009, he also led the conference in field goal success by hitting 14 of his 16 (87.5%) attempts, and he is 42 of 58 (72.4%) all-time for Alberta.
At 6'2" and 252 lbs, Gerbrandt will likely garner some attention as well.
In his two seasons with Alberta, the defensive end has racked up 76 solo tackles and 17 sacks in 16 games.
After leading the Golden Bears defense in sacks in his first CIS year, the Edmonton native led the conference last season in sacks and sack yards with 10 quarterback tackles, and 66 sack yards. He also became the first Golden Bear in team history to roll up over 100 sack yards in a career with 104 through two seasons.
Gerbrandt spent four seasons (2004-07) with the Edmonton Huskies of the Prairie Football Conference before joining the U of A. He was a CIS second-team All-Canadian in 2009 and the Canada West nominee for the CIS most outstanding lineman award.
Thomas Fry and Nicholas Ternovatsky hope to follow in the footsteps of recent Golden Bear offensive lineman who have gone onto CFL careers.
Last season Simeon Rottier, who played in the East-West game in 2008, became the first Golden Bear to be selected first overall (Hamilton) in the CFL Canadian College Entry Draft, and fellow 'hog Gord Hinse was selected in the second round, 11th overall, by the Edmonton Eskimos. Hinse was then signed to a four-year deal by the Eskimos.
Fry, a 6'2" 285 lbs lineman from Edmonton, is entering his third season of eligibility with the Bears after graduating Holy Trinity high school. He also spent some time with the provincial team in 2007.
Ternovatsky is the third member of the family to play for Alberta, following in the footsteps of brothers Neil (2002-06) and Leigh (2002). The 6'1" 280lbs St. Albert, Alta. native previously played for the Edmonton Wildcats of the PFC and is entering his fourth-season with the Evergreen and Gold.
Older brother Neil was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders, where he currently is on the roster, and collected a 2008 Grey Cup ring when Calgary won the CFL championship.
Pat Sheahan, head coach of the reigning Vanier Cup champion Queen’s Gaels, will lead the East squad in London, while Calgary’s Blake Nill will be in charge of the West contingent.
The East West Bowl showcases – for the most part - CIS players who will be eligible for the 2011 Canadian Football League draft.
No less than 16 all-Canadians from 2009 will take the field on May 8 – seven on each side - including Laval wide receiver Julian Feoli Gudino, Queen’s offensive tackle Matt O’Donnell, Laval guard Pascal Baillargeon, Montreal defensive tackle Gregory Alexandre, StFX linebacker Henoc Muamba, Acadia defensive back Mike Miller and Laval kicker Christopher Milo for the East, and Calgary running back Matt Walter, Calgary wide receiver Nathan Coehoorn, Wilfrid Laurier wide receiver Dillon Heap, Calgary inside receiver Anthony Parker, Western guard Matt Norman, Alberta defensive end Craig Gerbrandt and Alberta kicker Hugh O’Neill for the West.
NOTES: Past East West Bowl participants include Hec Crighton trophy winners Benoit Groulx of Laval, Daryl Stephenson of Windsor, Andy Fantuz of Western, Jesse Lumsden of McMaster and Tommy Denison of Queen’s... Other notables include former Sherbrooke Vert & Or Samuel Giguère and Calgary graduate Dan Federkeil, both members of the 2010 Super Bowl finalist Indianapolis Colts, as well as former Mustang Vaughn Martin, who played his first season with the San Diego Chargers after being selected in the fourth round in the 2009 NFL Collegiate Draft.
